When technology was first adapted you would need a wire to be able to connect but now there are wireless devices that work when no wire is plugged in. It just shows the minor differences that make a tremendous change in advancing. First Generation or 1g was first introduced in 1978 as one of the first ways to transmit voice far but was extremely slow and text messaging wasn't complete. In 2g, text messaging and phone calls were much better working, but everything else was extremely slow, like opening a webpage. As people were making this change from 1g to 2g, portable mobile devices were becoming affordable and easier to get.  

When 3g came out it was a huge improvement allowing you to do many things 2g didn't have such as watching videos, sending emails in much faster time, text messaging and calls becoming even faster than before. With wireless Lans becoming more popular people needed Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi is a non-profit organization that many companies use so people can connect to their connection. Bluetooth is more of a short range like connecting to a speaker to play music but can also connect to a lot of devices too. Mac address can identify the device and can help with security so an unknown device cant connect.
